The Gur hasidic community has instructed thousands of its yeshiva students to significantly scale back their Purim celebrations this year. In a recorded message circulated ahead of the holiday, leaders announced that yeshivas will not organize festive activities and that students should celebrate at home.
New guidelines prohibit dancing in the streets, traveling to festive meals in other cities, and organizing independent prayer groups. Students have been directed to pray only in their regular synagogues and to avoid public revelry. Visits to yeshiva staff and Purim meals are permitted, but only in small groups.
The traditional public reading of the Scroll of Esther by the Gerrer Rebbe is also expected to be held on a much smaller scale. While it is currently planned to take place in the usual study hall, attendance will likely be limited compared to previous years, and further changes remain possible.
