The United States State Department announced that more than 17,500 American citizens have returned to the United States from the Middle East since February 28. Of those, more than 8,500 arrived in a single day on Tuesday.
Many other Americans have departed the Middle East for destinations in Europe and Asia, while others are still in transit back to the United States. The State Department said it has been working continuously to support citizens seeking to leave the region.
Through its around the clock task force, the department has assisted nearly 6,500 Americans abroad by providing security guidance and travel support. Officials said efforts will continue to help any American citizen who wishes to depart the Middle East.
