Republican senators voted 47 to 53 to block a resolution that would have required President Donald Trump to seek congressional approval before taking further military action against Iran. Senator Rand Paul was the only Republican to join most Democrats in supporting the measure, while Senator John Fetterman sided with Republicans to defeat it.
Even if the resolution had advanced, it faced steep challenges. It would have needed to pass a full amendment process in the Senate, secure approval in the House of Representatives, and overcome a likely presidential veto requiring a two-thirds majority in Congress.
The vote followed criticism from Trump directed at five Republican senators who had previously supported a separate war powers resolution related to military action in Venezuela. Of those five, only Paul again voted to limit the president’s authority.
