Fireball explosions struck a major oil facility in Bahrain after Iranian missiles and drones targeted key energy infrastructure, damaging a unit at the national refinery in Maameer. Thick plumes of smoke and a rapidly spreading blaze were seen rising from the site before authorities said the fire had been brought under control. The refinery is capable of producing up to 267,000 barrels of oil per day and storing millions of barrels.
Bahrain’s defence ministry said it intercepted dozens of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, though some projectiles landed داخل the country. Sirens sounded nationwide as the government condemned what it described as indiscriminate attacks and affirmed its right to self defence.
The assault forms part of a wider regional escalation following deadly strikes by the United States and Israel that killed Iran’s supreme leader. Gulf states and the European Union have called on Iran to halt its attacks while reaffirming a commitment to diplomacy, even as air defence resources are stretched.
Shipping and energy markets have been severely disrupted, with multiple tankers attacked, hundreds of vessels stranded near key waterways, and several refineries across the region cutting output. The growing instability threatens a significant share of global oil supplies and raises the risk of broader confrontation across the Gulf.
