A Democratic candidate for the United States Senate in Iowa is facing scrutiny after hosting a campaign event at a bookstore known for its far-left activism, including merchandise calling to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement. State Senator Zach Wahls held a meet-and-greet at Dog-Eared Books in Ames, a store that has displayed signage stating that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is not welcome and has sold stickers advocating for the agency’s abolition.
The bookstore has pledged portions of its sales to immigrant advocacy funds linked to groups that support dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It has also hosted drag story time events for children, promoted books removed from some school districts over sexually explicit content, and supported causes such as child gender transition policies and pro-Palestinian activism. Wahls did not respond to questions about whether he was aware of the store’s activism or whether he regretted holding the event there.
Wahls’ campaign platform emphasizes what he calls old Democratic values and includes promises to secure the border and fix the nation’s immigration system based on law and order. He is running to replace retiring Senator Joni Ernst and faces a competitive primary ahead of the general election.
