The wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Rama Duwaji, liked social media posts celebrating the Hamas invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023, according to a report by Jewish Insider. One post showed Palestinians breaching Israel's borders and described the assault as 'breaking the walls of apartheid.' Another featured Palestinians on a captured Israel Defense Forces vehicle with the caption 'Resisting apartheid since 1948.' The posts were shared on the day of the attack.
Duwaji also liked two additional posts supporting protests against Israel the following day. There was no immediate comment from her regarding the report. Mamdani responded at a press conference, saying his wife is a private person who has held no formal role in his campaign or in City Hall.
The report adds to previous controversies involving social media activity by individuals within Mamdani's staff and inner circle related to Israel. Separately, the New York Times recently reported that the wife of United States Representative Dan Goldman liked posts after October 7 that criticized Jews who supported Palestinians and described Black Lives Matter as a 'terrorist organization' because one of its chapters celebrated the Hamas attack. New York City Councilmember Inna Vernikov criticized the newspaper, questioning whether it would similarly scrutinize Mamdani.
