A confrontation erupted at Washington Square Park in Manhattan when a man attempted to tear down a poster of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a vigil held in his honor. Video showed the man shouting 'Take this down!' before he was rushed by several attendees, knocked to the ground, and punched and kicked as police intervened.
Officers from the New York Police Department separated those involved and detained multiple individuals. The man, identified as Rami Even-Esh, was seen bleeding from the nose as he was escorted away. He told reporters that he removed the poster because he considered Khamenei responsible for violence and believed the vigil was inappropriate.
The gathering, attended by about two dozen people, was organized to mourn Khamenei's reported death in recent airstrikes targeting Iranian leadership. Counter-protesters waving American, Israeli, and pre-1979 Iranian flags also appeared, chanting slogans against the Iranian government. The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following escalating strikes and retaliatory attacks in the region.
