A senior researcher at the Alliance Center for Iranian Studies at Tel Aviv University explains that Iranian women have long played a central role in protests and resistance movements inside the country. Over the years, they have become both a symbol of internal struggle and the primary lens through which the world views developments in Iran.
She notes that women’s visibility, especially through the compulsory veil, makes their defiance particularly powerful. While oppression may not be immediately visible in the daily lives of men, the sight of large numbers of women dressed in black chadors highlights the regime’s control and amplifies the impact of their resistance.
Despite harsh conditions, Iranian women have consistently built connections with global feminist movements, maintaining solidarity and drawing international attention to their cause even during the most difficult periods.
