Yeshiva University’s men’s basketball team is heading to the Sweet Sixteen round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division Three tournament, marking the deepest tournament run in school history. A previous Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2020 was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, leaving unfinished business for the Maccabees, who now enter the matchup with a 22-8 record after two decisive early-round victories.
The team will face Emory University in Atlanta, where supporters from across the country are expected to create a home-like atmosphere despite the away setting. Leaders in Atlanta’s Jewish community say fans are traveling in large numbers, with local schools dismissing students early and families opening their homes to visitors in a show of what they call Southern Jewish hospitality.
Because the Friday afternoon game coincides with the start of Shabbat, many observant fans will remain in Atlanta for the day of rest, with community synagogues and families helping to host meals and gatherings. The team itself will also spend Shabbat in the local community, and a public event featuring coaches and players is planned for Saturday.
The tournament run comes amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, which has deeply affected the university community, including several Israeli-born players. Coaches and supporters describe the team’s success as a source of pride and a welcome distraction for Jewish communities in both the United States and Israel, as fans hope strong support can help propel the Maccabees to an upset victory.
