Israel's Hezbollah challenge: Why a military solution may not be enough - editorial

Hezbollah remains a potent threat to northern Israel despite earlier hopes that recent military actions had weakened the group. Over the past two weeks, the Iran-backed organization has intensified rocket fire, forcing residents into shelters with only 90 seconds' warning. With a significant arsenal of long- and short-range missiles still at its disposal, Hezbollah continues to disrupt daily life and pose a serious security challenge.

Israel is reportedly preparing for a large-scale ground operation in southern Lebanon aimed at dismantling Hezbollah's infrastructure south of the Litani River. Such an operation would mark the most extensive military action in Lebanon since 2006. However, it could entail prolonged fighting and significant casualties, raising concerns about the cost and sustainability of a purely military solution.

At the same time, France has proposed ceasefire talks between Israel and Lebanon, seeking to prevent further escalation and potentially open a path toward diplomatic recognition. While Israeli officials have expressed skepticism about the Lebanese government's ability to rein in Hezbollah, the editorial argues that any viable diplomatic opportunity should be seriously considered. Ultimately, Hezbollah must be neutralized, but if that goal can be achieved without a lengthy occupation and further loss of life, the diplomatic option deserves exploration.
