Clift Seferlis, 55, of Garrett Park, Maryland, was sentenced to 37 months in prison, fined 40000 dollars, and ordered to pay a 2200 dollar assessment after pleading guilty to 17 counts of mailing threats to Jewish institutions and eight counts of obstructing free religious exercise. He will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
According to the United States Department of Justice, Seferlis sent at least 40 letters and two postcards to more than 25 synagogues and other Jewish institutions between March 2024 and June 2025. The targeted sites included synagogues, museums, schools, community centers, and a deli.
Many of the letters contained violent language and threats to destroy buildings or harm individuals. Some referenced events in Israel and Gaza or past antisemitic attacks. Officials said the threats caused widespread fear and disruption within Jewish communities across the country.
