An Israeli traffic court has ruled that drivers may not exceed posted speed limits during rocket sirens, following a case in which a motorist was caught driving 157 kilometers per hour on a road with a 90 kilometer per hour limit. The driver argued that he accelerated during repeated alerts amid heightened security tensions to reach a protected area more quickly.
The court rejected this defense, stating that excessive speed in emergency situations can increase, rather than reduce, danger. Judges emphasized that the risk of fatal outcomes rises with higher speeds, particularly under already hazardous conditions.
While prosecutors cited the driver’s history of prior traffic offenses, the court slightly reduced his license suspension from 30 days to 20 days after weighing the broader circumstances. The ruling underscores that emergency conditions do not excuse actions that endanger public safety and reinforces official guidance to follow traffic laws during sirens.
