Serbia sharply criticized United Nations special rapporteur Francesca Albanese after she accused Belgrade of cooperating 'without shame' with Israel and alleged that Serbian weapons were being used in Gaza. Serbia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described her remarks as unbalanced and activist, calling them an unacceptable interference in the country’s internal affairs and inappropriate for her mandate.
Albanese has faced repeated backlash over her comments on Israel. Several European Union foreign ministers recently condemned her statements at a conference, where she suggested that much of the world had supported Israel politically and militarily and referred to a 'common enemy.' She later denied saying that Israel was the common enemy of humanity, calling the claims completely false.
Her past remarks, including social media posts referring to a 'Jewish lobby' controlling the United States, have drawn accusations of antisemitism, which she has rejected. Since the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel, in which more than 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage, Albanese has intensified her criticism, accusing Israel of genocide and drawing comparisons between Israeli leaders and the Third Reich. The United States sanctioned her last year in response to her statements about Israel’s war in Gaza.
