Trump administration sues Harvard over alleged failure to protect Jewish and Israeli students, seeks billions

The Trump administration has filed a 44-page lawsuit against Harvard University, accusing the school of failing to protect Jewish and Israeli students from harassment following the October 7, 2023 attack against Israel by Hamas. The complaint alleges that Harvard tolerated antisemitic behavior on campus and selectively enforced its rules, allowing discrimination to persist. The administration is seeking to recover billions of dollars in federal funding provided to the university.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the lawsuit reflects the administration’s commitment to combating antisemitism in educational institutions that receive taxpayer money. A White House spokesperson stated that the president is determined to ensure students can pursue their education in a safe environment. The Justice Department previously concluded in a civil rights investigation that Harvard had tolerated antisemitism.

Harvard denied the allegations, saying it cares deeply about its Jewish and Israeli students and has taken proactive steps to address antisemitism. The university cited enhanced training, strengthened enforcement of anti-discrimination policies, and programs promoting civil dialogue. Harvard called the lawsuit retaliatory and said it will continue to defend itself while prioritizing student safety and inclusion.
