Rabbi Avigdor Nebenzahl has called on the Chief Rabbinate to defy court orders requiring that rabbinical certification exams be opened to women, describing the directive as a serious breach of religious boundaries. He urged observant Jews to refuse participation in the exams, both as examiners and as candidates, as long as women are permitted to take part.
In a public statement, he wrote that complying with the appeals court’s demands would create 'a great breach in the walls of religion.' He argued that no one should examine or be examined under the current conditions.
As an alternative, Rabbi Nebenzahl proposed that certification exams be administered independently by respected rabbinical courts or another body operating without involvement from the civil courts. He said this would provide an option for God-fearing individuals seeking certification within a framework aligned with their religious outlook, adding that his stance would remain unchanged unless leading rabbis instruct otherwise.
