House Energy Committee To Investigate Columbia's Compliance With Trump Deal

The House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce is investigating whether Columbia University is complying with its agreement with the Trump administration. In a letter to the university, Committee Chairman Brett Guthrie raised concerns that Columbia may have withheld required information from a federal monitor tasked with overseeing the deal.

According to the letter, the university allegedly failed to provide the monitor with policies related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and antisemitism across most of its schools, despite a requirement to grant full access to relevant documents and data. The agreement with the federal government included a 200 million dollar fine and restored more than 400 million dollars in previously paused grant funding.

The letter also questions the leadership of Katrina Armstrong, head of Columbia's medical center and former university president, citing her prior testimony that she could not recall incidents of antisemitism. Lawmakers expressed concern about whether university leadership is capable of ensuring compliance with federal civil rights laws.

Columbia said it is reviewing the letter and will cooperate with the committee. The university stated it remains committed to maintaining a safe campus environment and has prioritized reforms aimed at addressing antisemitism and improving reporting and enforcement policies.
