The United States Department of Defense is considering redirecting weapons originally intended for Ukraine to the Middle East as military operations against Iran place growing strain on critical munitions supplies. According to a report citing people familiar with the discussions, air defense interceptor missiles purchased through an international initiative for Kyiv could be among the items affected.
The deliberations come as United States forces intensify their campaign in the region. The head of United States Central Command said forces have struck more than 10,000 targets inside Iran and are working to curb Tehran’s ability to project power beyond its borders.
A Defense Department spokesperson said the department will ensure that United States forces and allied partners have the resources needed to succeed. A spokesperson for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization said that weapons funded through the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List mechanism have been delivered or continue to be sent to Ukraine, despite the reported review.
