Tunnel systems, dissenting launch crews: A glimpse into the IDF's hunt for Iran's missile launchers

Israeli residents have repeatedly taken shelter as Iran intensifies missile fire toward population centers, prompting Israel's defense leadership to prioritize the destruction of Iran's surface-to-surface missile network under Operation Roaring Lion. Defense Minister Israel Katz receives daily intelligence and air force assessments detailing progress in targeting launchers and missile batteries.

According to Israeli military officials, sustained airstrikes have severely damaged Iran's missile production capabilities and destroyed or disabled a large portion of its roughly 470 launchers, leaving fewer than 180 operational. Many launchers have been hit directly, while others remain trapped in tunnel systems damaged by bombing. Intelligence reports also point to growing operational difficulties within Iran's missile units, including signs of refusal among launch crews.

Israeli forces are employing precise targeting methods to strike launchers hidden in extensive tunnel networks, though weather conditions and limited aerial resources pose challenges. The United States is assisting these efforts. At the same time, Israel is monitoring strike sites to prevent reconstruction, occasionally targeting repair attempts.

The recent rise in missile launches from Iran and Lebanon is seen as part of Tehran's strategy to increase pressure during ceasefire negotiations. Hezbollah's involvement aligns with this objective. Israeli officials insist that any future agreement must address Iran's nuclear and missile programs, terror financing, and the tunnel infrastructure used to conceal launchers.
