CNN crew say troops assaulted them, detained them, then trumpeted far-right ideology

A television news crew reported that Israeli soldiers assaulted and detained them while they were covering a settler attack in the northern West Bank village of Tayasir. Footage captured soldiers blocking the journalists from filming near an unauthorized outpost, with one soldier placing a cameraman in a chokehold and others pointing weapons at the crew. The journalists said they were held for about two hours along with local Palestinians.

During the detention, two soldiers said they were avenging the recent killing of an eighteen-year-old settler and declared that the entire West Bank belonged to Jews. One soldier acknowledged the outpost was illegal under Israeli law but said it would eventually become legal, adding that he was helping his people. The encounter, recorded on camera, included statements expressing nationalist and religious claims over the land.

The incident followed an overnight settler attack in Tayasir in which four Palestinians were reportedly hospitalized, including a seventy-five-year-old man who witnesses said was beaten in his home. The report also highlighted what the correspondent described as a broader pattern of soldiers supporting or failing to intervene in settler violence, amid rising attacks that have displaced Palestinian families in parts of the Jordan Valley.
