Hundreds of mourners gathered in the southern Lebanese town of Saksakiyeh to bury 11-year-old Jawad Younes, who was killed in an Israeli air strike that hit his family home. Lebanese health officials say more than 1,100 people have died since the latest escalation began, with civilians increasingly caught in the violence.
Jawad was playing football with his cousins when the strike destroyed the family compound. His father said he could not understand why their home was targeted, insisting there was no military presence there. Several relatives and local officials also denied any involvement with Hezbollah.
At the funeral, women in black robes wept as air strikes echoed in the distance. Jawad's mother described her son as 'gentle and pure' and said he admired the resistance. Survivors of the attack, including Jawad's aunt who suffered serious injuries, said there had been no warning before the strike and that the family would have fled if they had known.
