IDF solider killed in Lebanon; blaze at Haifa refinery after Iran, Hezbollah missile attack

An Israel Defense Forces soldier, Sergeant Liran Ben Zion, 19, was killed in an anti tank missile attack in southern Lebanon, and several other soldiers were seriously wounded in separate incidents. The military said the attack struck a tank during operations against Hezbollah, marking the sixth soldier killed since the renewed offensive began. Additional troops were injured by anti tank missiles, a drone strike, and an operational accident.

At the same time, a coordinated missile attack by Iran and Hezbollah triggered sirens across northern Israel and caused a fire at the main oil refinery in Haifa. Debris from an intercepted missile struck an industrial building and a fuel tanker at the site, sending thick black smoke into the air. Authorities said there was no damage to production facilities and no risk of hazardous materials leakage, though firefighters worked for hours to contain the blaze.

Hezbollah has fired hundreds of rockets daily, most aimed at Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon, while Israeli forces have continued strikes across Lebanon. The Lebanese military reported that one of its soldiers was killed in an Israeli strike near Tyre. Israel also said it targeted Hezbollah operatives it accused of using ambulances to transport weapons, while Lebanese officials reported that several medics were killed in recent strikes.

The renewed fighting began after Hezbollah joined the war between Israel and Iran earlier in March. The Haifa refinery, long considered a strategic and environmental flashpoint, has been hit multiple times in recent conflicts, intensifying calls by local officials and activists to relocate or shut down the facility due to safety and pollution concerns.
