The Combat Antisemitism Movement has urged Athens Mayor Haris Doukas to take immediate action against what it describes as a rising climate of public antisemitism in the Greek capital. The appeal follows a recent visit to the city by the organization’s chief executive, who reported encountering widespread antisemitic graffiti and hostile imagery.
In a formal letter, he described seeing slogans such as 'smash Zionism' and Israeli flags defaced with swastikas, warning that these were not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern. He said the displays contribute to an atmosphere in which antisemitism appears visible, tolerated, and normalized.
The organization also pointed to a public demonstration where participants displayed a banner praising the so called 'Axis of Resistance,' alongside imagery linked to Iranian backed groups. It stressed that confronting antisemitism, even when framed as political expression, is a core responsibility of democratic leadership.
The group called on the municipality to remove antisemitic graffiti, strengthen enforcement measures, and publicly condemn all forms of hatred against Jewish people, citing increased incidents in Athens since October 7, 2023.
