A drone attack launched from Iran killed a Kurdish couple in the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq, according to local media reports from Erbil. The strike targeted a rural village with no known military presence, with one drone hitting the couple’s home while two others landed in open land. The victims, Musa Anwar Rasool and Mujda Asaad Hassan, leave behind two orphaned daughters.
The attack is part of a broader escalation involving Iran and Iranian-backed militias, which have carried out hundreds of drone and missile strikes in the region since late February. Iranian forces have previously targeted Kurdish fighters and opposition groups, and regional officials believe Tehran is directly responsible for the latest strike.
Kurdish leaders strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a terrorist act and a war crime. President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called on Iraq’s federal government to prevent further assaults on civilians and to stop armed groups from operating within Iraqi territory.
According to regional media, hundreds of drones have struck areas across Erbil, Sulimaniyeh, and Dohuk provinces in recent weeks, causing dozens of casualties among security personnel and civilians. With the latest deaths, the toll from the ongoing attacks is expected to rise further.
