Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar held talks with Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen, updating him on Israel's decision to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon and on a recent meeting in Washington. The move marks the first such diplomatic engagement between the two countries in more than four decades.
Sa'ar said that despite the complex situation in Lebanon, which he described as being effectively under Iranian influence through Hezbollah, the talks represent a significant step forward. He emphasized that removing the Hezbollah threat to both Israel's security and Lebanon's sovereignty could create an opportunity for peace and normalization between the countries.
