The Israel Police canceled a plan to send around 70 officers, including senior officials, to attend the filming of an Independence Day segment of the right-wing talk show The Patriots on Channel 14. The reversal came after public criticism over the officers’ participation in a program known for its strong pro-government stance and controversial rhetoric.
The filming was scheduled to take place during work hours and was initially defended by police, who said the officers would join other first responders in the studio audience as part of a gesture of appreciation. Critics within law enforcement and beyond objected to the appearance, citing the show’s ideological tone and its host’s history of incendiary commentary.
The controversy unfolded alongside a High Court of Justice order requiring police to update judges on whether they would investigate several Channel 14 commentators accused of incitement and sedition. Despite repeated disputes and regulatory scrutiny, Channel 14 has grown significantly in recent years and is now the second most-watched television channel in Israel.
