California Jewish organizations are condemning antisemitic conspiracy theories published in the state’s official voter guide for the upcoming gubernatorial primary. The guide, mailed to registered voters by the Secretary of State, included a candidate statement from far-right activist Don J. Grundmann that promoted false claims about Israel and repeated longstanding antisemitic tropes.
In his submission, Grundmann alleged that Israel was responsible for the September 11 attacks, the 1967 attack on the USS Liberty, and other violent acts, while also invoking derogatory language about Jewish people and promoting theories of Jewish supremacy. A disclaimer noting that candidate views do not represent those of the Secretary of State’s office was added to his entry.
Jewish groups including the Jewish Federation of Orange County, the Anti-Defamation League of Orange County and Long Beach, the Jewish Community Action Network, and the Israeli American Council criticized the inclusion of the statement. In a letter to the Secretary of State, they argued that publishing such rhetoric in an official document lends it legitimacy and undermines the safety and dignity of Jewish communities, particularly amid rising antisemitism ahead of the June 2 primary.
