Israel has urged India to officially designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation, placing New Delhi in a difficult geopolitical position. The request comes at a time of rising tensions in the Gulf region and heightened instability in global oil markets.
India depends heavily on energy supplies that pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint currently influenced by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. With nearly forty percent of India's energy imports transiting through these waters, Tehran's assurance of safe passage for Indian vessels has added a significant strategic dimension to New Delhi's calculations.
Caught between two key partners, India has so far resisted Western pressure to make the designation. The situation presents a major test for its multi alignment foreign policy approach as it navigates the escalating crisis in the Middle East while seeking to safeguard its energy security and diplomatic balance.
