Israel carried out an airstrike in the Gaza Strip targeting Mohammed Odeh, recently appointed head of Hamas in Gaza and chief of its military wing, just 11 days after killing his predecessor. Gaza's civil defense agency reported that at least three people were killed and 20 wounded in the strike in Gaza City's Rimal neighborhood. Israeli officials indicated the operation was likely successful, though there was no immediate confirmation from Hamas regarding Odeh's fate.
According to a joint statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, Odeh previously headed Hamas intelligence during the October 7, 2023 attacks and was responsible for planning and carrying out assaults that killed and abducted Israeli civilians and soldiers. He had recently taken over leadership after Izz al-Din al-Haddad was killed in a similar strike earlier this month.
Israeli officials said Odeh played a central role in gathering intelligence on Israeli military positions near Gaza ahead of the October 7 attack. Israel has pledged to continue targeting those involved in the assault, maintaining operations despite a ceasefire that has been in place since October.
