Mamdani faces a Muslim problem ahead of Gracie Mansion protest

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism from multiple sides ahead of a planned protest outside Gracie Mansion, with some Muslim, Jewish and Christian groups accusing him of promoting what they describe as an extreme form of political Islam. Anila Ali, president of the American Muslim and Multifaith Women's Empowerment Council, says she will join the protest, arguing that Mamdani's politics are alienating moderate Muslims and harming interfaith relations in the city.

Ali contends that Mamdani represents a hardline ideology that merges religion and politics, which she says does not reflect the beliefs of many American Muslims who support religious freedom and coexistence. She argues that his support for boycotts against Israel and past comments defending controversial protest slogans have deepened divisions between Muslim and Jewish communities.

At the same time, Mamdani has drawn criticism from anti-Israel activists who say he has not gone far enough in backing Palestinian causes since taking office. The competing attacks have made the mayor a flashpoint in a broader national debate involving anti-Israel activism, progressive politics and religious identity.

The protest, organized by End Jew Hatred along with Muslim, Jewish and Christian organizations, is intended to present a united front against what organizers describe as extremist politics. Mamdani's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
