Man sentenced to 10 months in prison for urinating on tefillin cabinet, looting charity boxes

A court in Hadera sentenced a 20-year-old man from Arara to 10 months in prison for religious insult offenses after he vandalized a sacred Jewish site in Harish in December 2023. He was also given a suspended prison term and fined 10,000 shekels.

According to the indictment, the man approached a cabinet containing Torah scrolls, prayer shawls, tefillin kits, and charity boxes during the early morning hours. He urinated near the site, handled and damaged holy books, tore pages, destroyed charity boxes, stole money, and ripped apart tefillin straps while expressing hatred toward Jews.

The judge ruled that the acts were intentional and motivated by hatred, stating that they harmed fundamental values such as human dignity, freedom of religion, and the right to worship. The court said the actions undermined tolerance and the ability to maintain a religious lifestyle in public.

The defense acknowledged the severity of the acts and did not dispute the harm caused, but asked the court to consider the defendant’s personal circumstances, including past drug use.
