The Great 'Gas-by': 45,000-tonne LPG tanker braces for Hormuz crossing -- why it matters for India - The Times of India

An India-linked supertanker carrying about 45,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas is attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, Sarv Shakti, is headed toward India and is signaling that it has an Indian crew, a precaution adopted during the ongoing conflict. Its voyage comes as traffic through the critical energy corridor has dropped sharply due to security threats and military action.

If successful, the ship would become the first known Indian vessel to complete the crossing since the United States intensified its crackdown on Iran-linked shipping, which had reduced movement in the strait to near zero. Its passage would mark a significant breakthrough at a time when most vessels have avoided the route due to fears of attack and instability.

For India, one of the world's largest importers of oil and consumers of liquefied petroleum gas, the stakes are high. Disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict have caused shortages of cooking fuel, triggering public concern and supply pressures. In response, New Delhi has prioritized fuel shipments, increased domestic production, and negotiated directly with Tehran to move cargo through the contested waterway.

Although some shipments have managed to pass during the conflict, uncertainty remains high, with previous attempts disrupted by military action and electronic interference. The Sarv Shakti's full transit, expected to take up to 14 hours, is being closely watched as a test of whether energy flows through the strait can stabilize.
