'Force v Geography' Trump's Project Freedom meets Iran's residual firepower - The Times of India

The United States and Iran are nearing renewed confrontation in the Gulf after Tehran launched drone and missile strikes on the United Arab Emirates in response to Washington’s new naval escort initiative, called Project Freedom. President Donald Trump framed the operation as a humanitarian effort to guide stranded commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any interference would be met with force. Iran, however, dismissed the move as a provocation and asserted that it remains in full control of the strategic waterway.

Although the United States maintains overwhelming military superiority, Iran’s geographic advantage and use of coastal missiles, drones, and fast attack craft have allowed it to shape the escalation dynamics. Shipping traffic remains minimal, with many vessels avoiding the proposed American corridor and insurers hesitant to underwrite voyages without Iranian coordination. Tehran’s swift retaliation against the United Arab Emirates underscored the fragility of the initiative and heightened fears of broader conflict.

The disruption has strained global energy markets and driven up fuel prices in the United States, intensifying domestic political pressure on Trump. Gasoline prices have surged sharply since the conflict began, raising concerns they could climb further if the strait remains constrained. While Trump insists diplomacy is still possible and describes the operation as limited, critics question whether the strategy risks deeper military entanglement without a clear endgame.
