Lithuanian haredi leader Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch has withdrawn his opposition to advancing the Draft Law, reversing a stance that had stalled progress on the legislation. He had previously stepped back from supporting the bill after legal amendments raised concerns that yeshiva students could face harsher sanctions for failing to serve.
Members of the Degel HaTorah faction within the United Torah Judaism party urged Rabbi Hirsch to reconsider, warning that failure to pass the law could expose haredi men to stricter penalties, including loss of government funding and possible arrests. They also cautioned that voters within the community might become disillusioned and decline to participate in upcoming elections.
Following these discussions, Rabbi Hirsch agreed not to block the legislation, contingent on approval from Rabbi Dov Lando. Party officials believe there is a strong likelihood that Rabbi Lando will support moving the bill forward.
