North Korea has amended its constitution to mandate an automatic nuclear strike if leader Kim Jong Un is assassinated or if the country’s nuclear command system is threatened. The change was approved during a recent session of the Supreme People's Assembly in Pyongyang, according to reports, and outlines procedures for immediate retaliation in the event the nation’s leadership is incapacitated.
The revision comes amid heightened global tensions following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in a joint Israeli and United States military operation earlier this year. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service reportedly briefed senior officials on the update, which reflects Kim’s continued push to strengthen nuclear capabilities and adopt a more hard-line stance toward South Korea and the United States.
