Taking advantage of Ukraine ceasefire, Jewish couples wed in joint ceremony in Kyiv

During a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine, five Jewish couples were married in a joint ceremony in Kyiv, offering a rare moment of joy for a community deeply affected by years of conflict. The ceremony took place at the Beit Menachem Jewish Community Center and brought together couples of varying ages, including two 92-year-olds.

The temporary halt in fighting, observed from May 9 to May 11 in honor of Victory Day, allowed families and friends to safely gather. Around 250 guests attended the celebration, which was funded by the community center. Some couples had postponed marrying according to Jewish law due to the ongoing war.

Kyiv Chief Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch described the ceremony as one of the most moving events in recent years, highlighting the significance of continuing Jewish traditions despite daily uncertainty. Ukraine’s Jewish community, numbering about 32,000 nationwide, has faced severe hardships during the war, including damage to community institutions, yet continues to maintain religious and communal life.
