Why will this Shabbat be extra special?

The Shabbat before Shavuot has been described by the previous Gerrer Rebbe as 'Shabbat Derech Eretz' — a Shabbat dedicated to courteousness, kindness, and menschlichkeit. Just as the Shabbat before Passover and the Shabbat before Yom Kippur carry special names, this Shabbat is seen as an opportunity to focus on proper character and consideration for others.

The Talmud teaches that one who benefits from a celebratory wedding meal merits a life filled with Torah. The connection lies not in the food itself, but in the gratitude and appreciation shown to the hosts. Expressing thanks and making others feel valued reflects derech eretz, proper conduct.

As the anniversary of the giving of the Torah approaches, the message is clear: receiving and living by the Torah requires more than study and observance. It demands decency, kindness, and respectful behavior. This Shabbat serves as a reminder that true Torah life begins with being a good and considerate person.
