West Asia crisis: Russia backs India over Pakistan for 'long-term diplomatic role' in US-Iran conflict

Russia has suggested that India could take on a long-term diplomatic role in easing tensions between the United States and Iran, while noting that Pakistan is currently helping facilitate immediate dialogue. Speaking in New Delhi, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said India’s extensive diplomatic experience and growing global influence make it well suited to mediate between Iran and its Arab neighbours.

Lavrov highlighted India’s strong interest in regional stability, particularly as a major energy consumer reliant on supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He said India, as current chair of the Brazil Russia India China South Africa grouping, could encourage dialogue between Iran and countries such as the United Arab Emirates to prevent further hostilities. However, he clarified that the grouping itself should not formally act as a mediator, leaving such efforts to individual member states.

The Russian minister also accused unnamed countries of attempting to fuel hostility between Iran and Arab nations, blaming unprovoked aggression by the United States and Israel for escalating tensions. His remarks came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United Arab Emirates during a broader tour aimed at strengthening strategic and energy ties.

Lavrov confirmed that Modi is expected to visit Russia later this year for the upcoming summit of the five nation grouping. He added that India and Russia continue to deepen cooperation in energy, trade and financial transactions, moving toward greater use of national currencies in bilateral settlements.
