The conflict between Israel, Iran and allied groups intensified as Israeli airstrikes hit southern Lebanon and Hezbollah claimed it struck a military target in northern Israel. Israel said one of its soldiers was killed in southern Lebanon, bringing its total military deaths in the renewed fighting since March to 21. Despite efforts to extend a truce, residents in several Lebanese villages fled toward Sidon and Beirut as bombardments resumed.
In the United States, the aircraft carrier Gerald R Ford returned to Virginia after an 11 month deployment tied to operations related to the Iran conflict. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised the crew, and the carrier group received a Presidential Unit Citation for its combat performance during the campaign.
Diplomatic efforts continued amid rising tensions. Pakistan's interior minister traveled to Tehran to help revive stalled talks between Iran and the United States, while Iran said several European nations were discussing shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz after disruptions to maritime traffic. Iraq reported a sharp drop in oil exports through the strait following Iran's blockade.
Violence and unrest spread beyond the main conflict zones. In the West Bank, Palestinian officials said Israeli forces killed a man near the Jenin refugee camp, and in the Comoros, protests over rising fuel prices turned deadly after clashes with police.
