Dozens of activists from the Halutzei HaBashan movement chained themselves to the security fence along the old border line with Syria near Mount Hermon early Sunday morning. The protest took place between the Druze villages of Majdal Shams on the Israeli side and Khadr on the Syrian side, with several families who say they intend to establish a new community in the area.
The activists said they chose to chain themselves to the fence to make it harder for security forces to evacuate them. They are demanding that the diplomatic and security cabinet approve their plan to settle the area, arguing that civilian communities are necessary to secure long-term control.
The protest coincided with Golan Day, marking 59 years since the Six Day War. Participants stated that holding territory through permanent communities is the only way to deter future attacks and called on senior ministers to use the current political period to advance what they described as irreversible facts on the ground.
