5 longest walls on Earth ranked - and No. 2 is a fortress wall few people know

Great stone walls have long symbolised power, protection, and permanence, but their scale varies dramatically. While many surviving walls were built to defend cities or hilltop fortresses across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, one structure far surpasses all others in sheer length.

The Great Wall of China ranks first, stretching an officially measured 21,196 kilometres across northern China. Built across multiple dynasties and incorporating walls, trenches, and natural barriers, it dwarfs every other surviving wall system. In second place is India’s Kumbhalgarh Fort wall in Rajasthan, measuring about 36 kilometres, making it the longest continuous wall built around a single fort.

Other notable walls include the Diyarbakir Walls in Turkey at roughly 5.8 kilometres, the limestone Walls of Ston in Croatia at 5.5 kilometres, and Spain’s Walls of Avila at 2.5 kilometres. Advances in aerial photography and satellite imagery have changed how such structures are measured, revealing buried sections and natural defences that were once excluded, particularly in the case of the Great Wall of China.
