Lebanese Sunni Muslim member of parliament Fouad Makhzoumi forcefully rejected claims that Israel is attempting to instigate a civil war in Lebanon during a tense interview with Lebanese Australian interviewer Mario Nawfal posted on X. Nawfal suggested that many believe Israel benefits from destabilizing its neighbors, but Makhzoumi argued that Lebanon’s internal crisis is driven by Hezbollah, not Israel.
Makhzoumi described the current situation in Lebanon as 'worse than a civil war,' citing mass displacement, inaccessible villages, political violence, and a collapse in tourism revenue. He said Hezbollah is undermining the state, intimidating opponents, and promoting narratives that any attempt to disarm the group or negotiate directly would trigger civil war.
When pressed about Israeli intentions, Makhzoumi said he was referencing public statements by Israeli leaders denying plans for long term occupation, while emphasizing that political leadership can change through elections. He concluded by calling for improved communication and efforts to reach a reasonable agreement to stabilize the country.
