The head of one of Nigeria’s largest energy companies says the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has accelerated a global shift away from renewable energy and back toward hydrocarbons. Speaking to a British broadcaster, Wale Tinubu said countries now view energy security as more urgent than efforts to address climate change, arguing that governments are prioritising reliable fuel supplies over environmental concerns.
Tinubu also said the conflict involving Iran has sharply increased demand for oil and gas from West Africa, as nations look for alternatives to supplies from the Middle East. He described the situation as a significant opportunity for African producers to expand their role in global energy markets amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
