The interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla by Israel has drawn attention to links between a sanctioned organization and a newly formed group in New Jersey. Amrou Ibrahim, a New Jersey resident detained and deported after the failed attempt to breach Israel’s naval blockade, was identified as a participant in the voyage.
An archived online profile describes Ibrahim as a founding member of the New York and New Jersey chapter of Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network. In October 2024, the United States and Canada designated Samidoun as a branch of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which is classified as a terrorist organization. The New York and New Jersey chapter subsequently became defunct.
Following Ibrahim’s arrest, a group called Al Ahrar Palestinian Prisoner Support Toronto publicly claimed him as a member of its New York and New Jersey chapter. Although Al Ahrar describes itself as a new organization, it says its members have long been involved in activism for Palestinian prisoners and has quickly developed ties to several groups that previously had overlapping membership or associations with Samidoun.
Ibrahim was also reported to be involved in launching a group called Nidal, focused on promoting resistance culture in the West. A similarly named organization emerged after Samidoun’s designation, led by former members of the earlier network, further underscoring continuing connections among activists despite the prior sanctions.
