Spiritual leader Rabbi Dov Lando has instructed lawmakers from United Torah Judaism to stop cooperating with the coalition’s efforts to advance the controversial ultra-Orthodox military draft bill, dealing another setback to the legislation. His decision follows growing doubts that the bill can secure enough support within the coalition, as several lawmakers have voiced opposition and warned it could harm national security.
The draft bill has become entangled with efforts by ultra-Orthodox parties to dissolve the parliament and move elections forward from late October to September, citing scheduling concerns around the High Holy Days. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had pushed to advance the bill in what was seen as a last attempt to prevent the ultra-Orthodox parties from backing early elections.
Tensions escalated after Netanyahu reportedly acknowledged that the legislation lacked sufficient coalition backing. Critics argue the bill is designed mainly to satisfy ultra-Orthodox coalition partners and would not significantly increase enlistment, despite repeated warnings from the Israel Defense Forces about a severe manpower shortage after more than two years of war.
