A 28-year-old Palestinian man, Alaa Khalid Subeih, was shot dead during a settler attack on the village of Tayasir in the northern occupied West Bank. His family said he was defending his greenhouse when he was killed, describing him as a calm and respected member of the community. A senior United Nations human rights official said he was shot by a settler, while the Israeli military said an off-duty soldier fired at him after accusing him of throwing stones.
The incident followed a day of reported clashes between settlers and Palestinians in the area. Ambulance crews said they were denied access to the village by Israeli soldiers and that Subeih’s body has not been returned to his family. The Israeli military said the case is under review, but issued differing descriptions of the victim in statements released in Hebrew and English.
The killing comes amid rising settler violence in the West Bank and growing criticism within Israel. Former security chiefs warned that what they called 'government-sponsored Jewish terrorism' was escalating and harming national security. Reports also indicate that the government has approved dozens of additional settlements, a move criticized by anti-settlement groups as a sharp expansion of existing communities considered illegal under international law.
