Israel began commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day with a state ceremony at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, marking the start of nationwide observances honoring the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust. The opening event, held at Warsaw Ghetto Square and pre recorded due to the security situation, features addresses by the prime minister and the president, along with the lighting of six memorial torches by Holocaust survivors.
On Tuesday morning, a two minute siren will sound across the country, bringing daily life to a halt as citizens stand in silence. Official wreath laying ceremonies and a public event where victims' names are read aloud will follow at Yad Vashem, with participation from national leaders and survivors.
Commemorations extend beyond Israel with the annual March of the Living at the Auschwitz Birkenau memorial site in Poland. Survivors and participants from around the world, including victims of antisemitic attacks, will take part in a ceremony emphasizing remembrance and the fight against antisemitism.
The day will conclude with a closing ceremony at the Museum of the Fights of the Ghettoes in Kibbutz Lohamei HaGeta'ot, where six survivors will light memorial torches in a final tribute to Holocaust victims.
