Make the most of the Government's energy grants and save thousands

The Government has unveiled enhanced energy upgrade grants aimed at helping homeowners cut heating bills as fuel prices continue to rise. The most significant boost is for heat pumps, with total support now reaching up to €12,500 when including new incentives for radiator upgrades and a renewable heating bonus. While this nearly doubles previous support, installation can still cost between roughly €13,800 and €35,000 depending on the system and home, meaning savings depend heavily on insulation levels and electricity pricing.

New standalone grants for energy-efficient windows and doors offer up to €5,600, provided minimum insulation standards are met. Insulation grants for attics and cavity walls have risen only modestly, despite higher building costs, though they remain among the most cost-effective upgrades. A new measure will also allow homeowners who previously received wall insulation support to apply for funding for a second wall upgrade.

Solar panel grants remain lower than in previous years at up to €1,800, reflecting a gradual reduction in incentives. Experts say the financial benefits of heat pumps in particular depend on choosing competitive electricity tariffs and timing usage to off-peak hours, which can dramatically reduce running costs. While upfront expenses remain high, careful planning and grant support could help homeowners significantly reduce long-term energy bills.
