Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told security cabinet ministers that he agreed to a ceasefire with Lebanon at the request of United States President Donald Trump, according to Hebrew media reports. He emphasized that Israel was acting in close coordination with its closest ally and chose to cooperate with Trump’s request.
The announcement reportedly surprised several ministers, who were angered to learn about the ceasefire through media coverage rather than through a formal cabinet vote. Netanyahu declined demands to immediately hold an official vote on the decision.
He said that Israeli forces would remain stationed at the strategic points they currently control during the 10-day ceasefire, which is set to begin tonight. Netanyahu also pledged to hold a security cabinet discussion on the matter at a later stage.
