Ceasefire announcement catches Israel off guard

News of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon brokered by President Donald Trump came as a surprise across Israel, even as rockets were still being fired from Lebanon into northern communities. In Nahariya, air defence systems intercepted incoming rockets and at least three people were wounded before the truce took effect. Many residents expressed anger and disbelief, questioning why the government agreed to halt fighting while threats persisted.

Reports suggest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet with little notice and without a formal vote before announcing the agreement. Critics say this reflects a pattern of externally driven ceasefires, with some accusing Netanyahu of yielding to pressure from Washington. A former military chief argued that Israel has struggled to turn battlefield gains into lasting diplomatic outcomes.

Netanyahu described the truce as an opportunity for a historic peace agreement but rejected key demands from Hezbollah, including a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. He insisted Israeli forces would remain in a reinforced security zone and maintain the right to act against future threats. Public opinion polls indicate strong support among Israelis for continuing strikes against Hezbollah, and many remain sceptical that the ceasefire will bring lasting security.
