The United Nations has condemned the killing of a French peacekeeper in southern Lebanon after a patrol came under fire, leaving one soldier dead and three others wounded, two of them seriously. The peacekeepers were investigating reports of improvised explosive devices near positions in the south when they were targeted by what an initial assessment described as non state actors believed to be Hezbollah.

Secretary General Antonio Guterres strongly denounced the attack and extended condolences to the family of the victim and to France. He also wished a swift recovery to those injured. The incident marks the third deadly attack on peacekeepers in recent weeks, despite a ten day cessation of hostilities announced earlier in April.

The United Nations warned that attacks on peacekeepers may constitute war crimes and are grave violations of international humanitarian law. Officials called for a full investigation and accountability for those responsible, stressing that such violence undermines efforts to maintain stability along the boundary between Lebanon and Israel.

The peacekeeping mission, established in 1978 and expanded after the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, includes more than 10,000 troops from dozens of countries. Ongoing tensions and periodic exchanges of fire in southern Lebanon have heightened risks for personnel operating in the volatile region.
